Long-Time Church Member Shares Memories
There are some church members that have been going to Community Bible Church for many years. One long-time church member, Phyllis Saffer, has been attending since 1942. Here are some remembrances she shared:
“I started going there in September 1942. We met in the building that isn’t there anymore. It was where the Memory Garden is now. Our Pastor was George Gray and Nettie was his wife. In fact, he was the pastor that married Wayne and I in the church 58 years ago.”
“Our church has had a missionary budget ever since I can remember. We try to give a good percent of our income to help stateside and foreign missions. Very important part.”
“It was after our Pastor Gene Denning came we started the second building. Which is still being used and has many names like Upper Room, Former Sanctuary, and Chapel.”
“We started the one [building] we are in now when Earl Brubaker was Pastor. One of the family’s attending at the time had a portable sawmill and some other folks had logs, so some of us logged the logs and Don Wallace sawed the boards and that made the inside walls in the Sanctuary.”
“I remember one time when Pastor Gray took a load of us teens to a teen gathering at Eagle Point which was pretty exciting.”
“Most all of the funerals and weddings were held at Community Bible Church in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.”
“There weren’t many churches in the valley back then except the Catholic, Bridgeview Church, Adventist, and Community Bible Church.”
“One other thing I remember was when the building we are in now, the architect made a booboo and didn’t put it in the plan for the electric cable to run under the cement of the gym floor and so the guys had to jack hammer the ditch to do it after the floor had set.”
“We as a church did most of the building on both of the added buildings. For the one we are in now we had a man in our church who was a builder by trade so we hired him to head up the work. We all worked together and the Lord provided.”
